April 6-10

We hope that everyone had a nice and restful vacation!  It is time to hit the ground running as we prepare for our final descent into third grade.  The next several weeks will be very busy with instruction and assessment.  We know that the weather is nice, and students are yearning to run and play, but it is crucial that they are in school and ready to learn for the next little while.  We appreciate your support in getting them to school each and every day!

Here is what we will be working on in English class this week:
  • opinion writing: What is your favorite animal?  - learning to use reasons and details in a logical and sequential manner to support your opinion
  • phonics: adjectives - comparative and superlative
  • phonics: common word list #11 - new, sound, take, only, little, work, know, place, year, live
  • phonics: soft sounds of c and g
  • phonics: adding suffixes to sneaky e words and single-syllable long vowel words
  • phonics: adverbs
  • Daily 5/Power Hour: continued practice in reading, spelling, and comprehension

  • coin recognition - dimes and quarters (we did pennies and nickels last week)
  • phonics: phonetic skill 3 - when a vowel stands along, it makes a long sound
  • phonics: phonetic skill 4 - the sneaky e rule (when the letter e comes at the end of a word and is preceded by another vowel, the e is silent, making the first vowel sound long).
  • phonics: adjectives
  • phonics: adjectives and linking verbs
  • phonics: spelling with -ke (long vowel, silent e words)
  • Daily 5/Power Hour: continued practice in reading, spelling, and comprehension
I will have a substitute on Wednesday.  I will be at the district office screening applicants for the opening that we have in second grade for next year.  Please remind your student how to behave for a substitute  teacher.  Thanks for all your help and support at home!

March 16-20

Welcome to a new week!  Here is what we will be working on in English this week:
  • Response to Literature: Maps - pulling information from text, then using that information to write a paragraph
  • Writing assessment: What is your favorite animal?  Why?
  • Phonics: action verbs
  • Phonics: linking verbs
  • Phonics: subject/verb agreement
  • Phonics: helping verbs
  • Math: coin recognition - pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters (this is not part of our core, but working with coins is, and we have found from past experience that most students still cannot recognize the coins and their values at this point in second grade - so we need to cover it so they can successfully work with coins.  It would help tremendously if you could also go over pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters at home!)
  • Daily 5/Power Hour: continued practice in reading, spelling, and comprehension
