The Daily 5 is a teaching and learning structure that promotes student independence and individual responsibility. It helps students to become independent and self-motivated learners, while encouraging them to respect the learning of others. Through Daily 5, students begin to enjoy the learning process and start to incorporate the habits and attitudes of life-long learners into their daily routines.
Our Daily 5 consists of five research-based components:
1) Read to Self - during this time, students read silently from a book that is tailored to fit their reading level. This is time for them to practice reading, and practice using CAFE strategies to overcome obstacles to their reading.

2) Read to Someone - students pair up and read to one another. They learn to ask questions about what is being read, how to answer questions about what they are reading, and how to help another reader in a constructive and positive way.

3) Listen to Reading - students listen to professional readers read books using the computer, IPad, or tape player. This is a great way for students to hear how reading should sound, and for them to learn how to pace their own reading, while adding inflection and meaning to the words.
4) Word Work - students work on their word sorts.

5) Work on Writing - students create stories, narratives, and non-fiction pieces while learning how to become better writers. We often utilize Thinking Maps during this time.
