We will be traveling to Heritage Elementary on Tuesday to meet the pen pals that we have been corresponding with all year. School will be dismissed on Wednesday at 12:00.
May 16-20
- writing: We have been working on a writing/art project for a contest that Logan City is hosting. They will be working on a paragraph about what they like about Logan to go along with an oil pastel picture they created of Logan.
- reading comprehension: continue with Change Makers
- math: finish up telling time to five minutes and AM & PM
- math: start working on money (penny, nickel, dime, quarter, and one-dollar bill) - coin recognition and counting groups of mixed coins
- phonics: continue to practice concepts that we have learned previously
We have several special events coming up this week:
pizza party for students that sold a lot of chocolate on Monday (by invitation only)
school-wide field day on Tuesday
AR goal reward: swimming at the Aquatic Center on Wednesday from 10-2
awards night on Thursday (by invitation only!)
school-wide carnival on Friday @ 6 PM
Practicing time at home.
Please help them practice telling time at home by giving them a time to show you on their clock. We have been learning how to tell time to the nearest five minutes. The top petals represent the hour, the petals underneath represent the minutes. Thanks for your help!
May 9-13
- phonics - we have finished formal phonics instruction!!!!! We will continue to practice what we have learned for a short time each day.
- comprehension - finish up Change Makers
- writing - continue with Response to Literature (finish up apple writing and move on to deserts)
- math: time (analog and digital, telling time to the nearest five minutes, am & pm)
- orchestra assembly - Monday @ 1:30
The deadline for AR goals is Friday, May 13th. Everyone in the red class has made it with the exception of one student. The blue class still has nine students that have not reached their goal yet. For the students that meet their goal, we will be going to the Logan Aquatic Center of Wednesday, May 18th (please don't rain!!).
May 2-6
- phonics: the four sounds of /ea/
- phonics: the five sounds of /ei/ and /ie/
- writing: continuing our response to literature activities (pulling information from text and using it as a source of information for writing) - you should have seen a narrative piece about a bean plant come home last week
- reading comprehension: continue with Change Makers - objective: to identify the main idea of a passage, to ask and answer questions to clarify meaning, to use text features to find information in the text quickly
- orchestra concert on Monday @ 1:45
There are two weeks left to earn points towards AR goals. The deadline is May 13th.
Most kids are on track to reach their goal at this point. There are only two that I am concerned about. I will send home progress reports on AR point totals one day this week.

- continue with response to literature - pulling information from text to use as a source for writing (you should have seen one come home last week about recycling - we read an article about recycling and then we wrote our own version using information from the article)
- comprehension: continue with Change Makers and the objectives outlined in the last post
- math: vocabulary (halves, thirds, fourths, whole, bar graph, line plot, and pictograph)
We have three special events this week. We will be having an internet safety assembly on Monday @ 12:45. The Rotary Club will be making their annual visit on Tuesday to pass out books, and to give a quick talk about community service. We will be going to Ellen Eccles on Wednesday to see Taiko drumming. The buses will leave at 9 AM, and we will return at 2 PM.
April 18-22

- phonics: decoding exceptions (there are so many in English!)

- phonics: letter combinations that split (sc, sk, sp, st, gn, nk, and ng)
- writing: the kids did well with the Lincoln writing last week. We will continue working on pulling information from text and using it as a source for writing through the end of the school year. This is an important skill for them to know for their continued success in school
- comprehension: we are beginning a new text called Change Makers. The objectives we will be focusing on are identifying the main topic, describing the connections between a series of events, using images to augment understanding of text, identifying key details, and asking and answering questions.

- writing: begin new informational writing piece (we will be pulling information from the book we read about Theodore Roosevelt to write about about him)
- comprehension: compare and contrast Theodore Roosevelt and Marching with Aunt Susan
- comprehension: read Lincoln (a poem) - objective: to describe how words supply meaning in a poem
- comprehension: discuss and determine author's purpose in the three texts we have been reading
March 14-18
- phonics: murmur diphthongs ar, er, ir, or, & ur
- phonics: assessment on murmur diphthongs
- phonics: roots, prefixes, & suffixes
- writing: begin new informational writing activity - we will be researching an animal, reading books about that animal, and pulling information from the books to use in our writing.
- reading: use Theodore Roosevelt book to learn more about text features and how readers use them to find information quickly (objective: readers understand that illustrations in literary texts and specific features in informational texts can help them understand what they read).
- science: the blue class began investigating states of matter last week (the red class is doing it in Spanish class), and we will continue that investigation throughout this week.
We are having our annual Leadership Day on Wednesday, March 16th. We will have an opening assembly at 1:00, and then you will be able to tour the school to learn more about how students at Bridger are learning to be leaders.

- writing: continue working on our shared version of informational writing (we are writing about things to do in Logan)
- reading: continue reading Theodore Roosevelt (this ties in with our informational writing - students are learning about how to pull information from a text and use it as facts/details in writing)
We haven't set new AR goals yet (we don't know what date to put in since we haven't been able to get hold of anyone at the Aquatic Center to confirm that as the reward), but they can still take tests that will count towards the new goal when it is set.
